The Girl Who Fell From the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow
Rachel, the daughter of a Danish mother and a black G.I., becomes the sole survivor of a family tragedy. Forced to move to Portland, Oregon (from Chicago) to live with her strict African-American grandmother, Rachel is thrust into a mostly black community. Her light brown skin and blue eyes bring her a constant stream of attention. This is a portrait of a bi-racial girl who is forced to deal with society’s ideas of race and class.

One Amazing Thing by Chitra Divakaruni
Seven visa applicants are waiting in the Indian Consolate in an American city when an afternoon earthquake rips through the building, trapping them in the office. There is little food; the office begins to flood. When the stress seems too much to bear, the young graduate student suggests that they each tell a tale of “one amazing thing.”
