It’s that time of year! Time for Medicare Open Enrollment for 2020. Open enrollment is from October 15 to December 7, 2019. During this time, all people with Medicare can make changes to their health and prescription drug plans for the next year. Starting January 1, your new plan or changes to coverage begins.
In order to learn more, we will be providing a free “Medicare Made Clear” program on October 21 at 1pm. This program is for individuals who currently have Medicare or will be eligible for Medicare in the near future. The program will provide a review of Original Medicare, what it covers, doesn’t cover, and the coverage options that are available to Medicare beneficiaries. The presentation will run for 1 hour, with a Q&A session. This program is being presented by a UnitedHealthcare licensed representative. A Helen Plum Library card is not necessary to attend the program. To register, please click here!
Senior Health Insurance Program
While Medicare Made Clear is a group program, there is a Senior Health Insurance Program (SHIP) that offers free local, personalized counseling to people with Medicare. The SHIP contact in Illinois is through the Illinois Department on Aging: Visit their website here.
Helen Plum offers free SHIP/Medicare counseling in the Library on Tuesday mornings. In October and November, there will be a SHIP counselor on-site each Tuesday from 9-1. You can meet with a SHIP counselor who will help answer your questions about Medicare and Medicare supplements. To schedule a one-hour appointment with Stephanie Howanietz, please call (630) 469-2300.
In DuPage County, there are a few places that have a SHIP counselor on-site. One such place is an organization called Achieving Independence and Mobility (AIM) CIL. Located in Downers Grove, one of their services is providing free SHIP/Medicare & Medicaid counseling. For more information, please visit their website here.
Helen Plum Library also has a database to help you with MediGap guidance. Weiss Ratings offers a customized Medicare Supplement Insurance Planner. You can access your own 80+ page report to help you select a Medigap insurance plan that’s right for you. Access the Weiss Ratings Medigap Tool here.
