Must-Have Apps for Youth Summer Reading

It's finally summertime! Did you know that, according to the Institute of Educational Sciences, students without access to summer learning opportunities can lose up to two months of reading skills? Thankfully, summer reading programs like ours can create reading habits and prevent summer learning loss.

During Summer Reading, young readers choose their own books, reading what they want! This time spent reading for pleasure can improve writing and spelling abilities, grow larger vocabularies, and help reading comprehension. It can also improve motivation, confidence, and enjoyment in learning. Our Summer Reading goal at HPL is to provide children and teens with a wide variety of reading options and inspire their desire to continue to read when they return to school.

It's easier than ever to participate in Summer Reading thanks to all the reading material and activities available at home! With your Helen Plum Library card, you have access to free reading apps specifically designed with kids in mind. Here are some of our favorites:

LOTE4Kids

Digital books in nearly 50 World Languages allow kids to enjoy the magic of books in Languages Other Than English (LOTE). Each book also comes with English translations to help kids learn languages.

Videos for grades PreK-3 that help build vocabulary and knowledge in English and Spanish.
