Early Literacy Librarian

Hours: 40/wk full-time, salaried, non-exempt position
Salary: Range starts at $47,500

Helen Plum Library is seeking an Early Literacy Librarian to join our Youth Services team in a full-time position. The person in this position is responsible for promoting awareness of early literacy concepts through in-house events and initiatives as well as outreach to parents, caregivers and community organizations serving preschoolers.

The right candidate will excel at listening, understanding and communicating with library patrons and colleagues. They will value teamwork and collaboration. They will be flexible and adaptable to new situations and thrive in an environment of change. The ideal candidate will exercise resourcefulness, tact, leadership and independent judgment.


  • MLIS degree, with experience serving children and families in libraries
  • Knowledge of and ability to communicate current and relevant early literacy trends and advancements
  • Demonstrates an understanding of emergent literacy and family literacy and its impact on child development
  • Demonstrates computer competency and an awareness of current technology trends with an ability to incorporate technological advancements relative to the patrons we serve in Youth Services

Part-Time Substitute Facilities Monitor 

Hours: Approximately 10 hours per week
Salary: $14 per hour, depending on qualifications
Helen Plum Library is seeking an energetic, punctual individual to fulfill the position of Part-Time Substitute Facilities Monitor. This position is responsible for maintaining a safe, orderly environment for the patrons and staff of the Library. A positive attitude and willingness to work with others is desired.


  • Maintains order to ensure the safety and comfort of Library patrons and staff
  • Assists Library staff and management as needed
  • Writes incident reports and notifies proper authorities when necessary
  • Prepares and sets up rooms for meetings
  • Maintains general awareness of what is happening in the Library
  • Secures the building at closing
  • Performs minor maintenance as needed

Abilities, Knowledge and Skills:

  • Able to deal with angry or disruptive patrons in an authoritative, pleasant, mature and courteous manner
  • Able to lift boxes and move furnishings
  • Neat appearance
  • Energetic and punctual
  • Able to stand for long periods of time


  • Available to work nights and weekends
  • Basic computer skills
  • High School degree
