Position: 2026 Seasonal High School Shelving Assistant

Hours: 16-17 hours/week, 16-week position. Includes some evenings and alternating weekends.

Beginning Hourly Rate: $15.00-$18.02 per hour, depending on qualifications.

$18.02 is the midpoint of the pay grade. Starting at or above the midpoint is reserved for candidates who exceed the minimum qualifications and have significant relevant experience.

Position Description

The Helen Plum Library is seeking an enthusiastic Seasonal Shelving Assistant to join our busy Patron Services team this summer! The right candidate will work well on a highly collaborative team, have a strong eye for detail, demonstrate excellent communication skills, and provide top-notch customer service to patrons.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Providing consistently professional, gracious, and friendly service to patrons and colleagues 
• Emptying book drops and checking in library materials
• Sorting, shelving, and maintaining all book and non-book materials
• Processing holds on materials, generating hold lists, and pulling interlibrary loan requests
• May be asked to fill in at drive up window or circulation desk, with training

Qualifications

• Open to high school students ages 14-18, including recent 2026 graduates.
  • Candidates under age 16 must obtain and provide a valid Illinois employment certificate (work permit) prior to hire. 
• Basic computer skills, including internet use, email, Microsoft Office, and printing
• Previous customer service experience a plus, but not required
