Library Love: 10 Unexpected Ways to Use Your Library

Posted on:

February is Library Lovers’ Month! We’re letting you in on some hidden gems to help you fall even more in love with HPL. For instance, we already know you love Museum Passes and Wi-Fi Hotspots, but did you know you can check out sheet music or book club kits? There's SO much to love, so we're highlighting unique ways to use your library not just this month, but all year long. Trust us, you’re gonna love ‘em!

1. Swipe right on your next Bookmatch

Seeking your next book soulmate? Whether you’re new to the reading scene or a lifelong bookthrob, our librarians can set you up with your next favorite read. Fill out the Bookmatch form with your interests, and our librarians will send you personalized reading recommendations they think you’ll love. It’s a matchmaking service, but for books!

2. Binge Box and chill

You probably knew you could check out DVDs and Blu-Rays, but Binge Boxes take movie night to the next level. Each Binge Box contains four or more movies grouped by clever themes like Stop Saving Matt Damon, Never Travel with Tom Hanks, Somethin’ Sappy, and many more. (There’s also plenty of family-friendly Binge Boxes available for a fun night in!)

3. Learn a new song to serenade your sweetheart

Musicians, listen up! You can borrow sheet music from the Library to serenade your sweetheart, have a family singalong, or just jam solo. Our collection includes music from favorite movie scores to rare hits from the 50s.

4. Record that song! (Or podcast, or voiceover)

Located in our Studio 411 makerspace, the Recording Lab has everything you need to professionally record your audio. Take it from Lombard musician Chris Runge, who recorded a full music album at HPL!

5. Gather your Galentines with Book Club in a Bag

Book Club in a Bag kits have everything you need to host your Galentines (or book bros) for book club night. Each kit comes with 10 copies of the same book, a discussion guide with questions, supplemental articles, and more resources to get the conversation flowing. Check them out for six weeks with your Helen Plum Library card.

6. Teens, have a lowkey hang in the Hive

Teens have a space at the Library specifically for hangouts. The Hive is furnished with video game consoles, board games, and comfy seating, making the perfect spot for a lowkey hang, no cap.

7. Enjoy an Artistic Legacy

Did you know HPL hosts rotating art exhibitions? Currently on display on the 2nd Floor is “Hereditary Hues: A Mother-Daughter Artistic Legacy” by Dixie Lee Hadley and Darlene "Weeze" Edwards. The artists’ love for their work and for each other shines through this vibrant mixed media exhibition through Fri, Feb 27.

8. Make a handmade gift for your Valentine

Warm someone’s heart with a handmade gift from our Studio 411 makerspace. Sewing machines, laser engraving, and Cricut machines are just a few of the tools available. Book one-on-one help or stop by Drop-In Studio Hours to create something with love in Studio 411.

9. Listen to a good story

If your kiddo is a fan of Yoto cards or Tonies, they may fall in love with Playaways! Each Playaway is pre-loaded with a popular audiobook. Check out what titles are available at HPL.

10. Spread the love and give back

There are several ways to give back this month at the Library. Drop non-perishable food items in the Hub to benefit the College of DuPage Fuel Pantry, which supports the needs of CoD students experiencing food insecurity. You can also donate to the Outreach House Diaper Drive in the Hub to help local families. Finally, drop in or make an appointment for the Versiti Blood Drive on Wed, Feb 11 from 2:30-7pm.

11. Bonus: Share your library love around town with HPL swag!

Are you in love yet? Snag a shirt or cozy hoodie to share your library love with the world! Note that the Library does not receive profits from the sale of any items, just warm fuzzies from your love and support.
